Founded by the late Nii Kojo Danso I in the late 1960s, Dansoman is a suburban town in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.
The name Danso(man) is derived from the founder’s name Danso. Danso(man) “mai or man” means town in Ga. At the time it was built, Dansoman was the largest planned urban settlement of its kind in the ECOWAS (Economic Organisation for West Africa States) region.
Dansoman, near the coast 14km southwest of the city centre, is a large area with a predominantly middle/high-income population although some low-income people live here too. Housing is a mix of detached and semi-detached houses and apartments on estates built from the early 1970s onwards.
Several schools are located here and some of the landmarks here include Senior High Schools like Ebenezer Senior High, St. Margaret Mary Senior High and Wesley Grammar Senior High.
The Methodist University College of Ghana, one of the newest private universities in the country, is to be found in Dansoman on the premises of the Wesley Grammar School.
Dansoman is legendary for its lively night scene where clubs and churches open all night to revellers. As such the estate which at one point was the largest in West Africa never sleeps.
